Melbourne Cup Week
On 6th November 2016 by HelenThis week was Melbourne cup week. Melbourne cup is a huge horse race like our Grand National but the whole country goes crazy and it’s one big excuse to party. In Melbourne it’s a national holiday. Five of the girls from the hostel and myself decided we would go though we maybe should have thought about this a little sooner as it resulted in us panic calling a few of the bars asking if they would let us in for free or not on group packages where you pay $80 and get dinner and champagne. We found a place at Darling Harbour called the Blackbird Cafe and it was really good. We timed it just right for happy hour and spent all afternoon there. We did however miss the actual horse race but oh well. We had such a cliché moment when we one of the girls had drinks sent to her, promptly followed by the really arrogant guy who was flashing his cash around (you know the type)! Anyway pretty harmless guy and up for a laugh but we couldn’t really take him seriously!
At about 7pm a few of us went back to the hostel with sushi and more bubbles and carried on our night there! It was a really fun day and I was so glad I managed to experience it.
Wednesday was spent recovering from Tuesday.
Thursday was another chilled day I helped my friend move into her new flat before I went to the city to run some errands then back to the hostel to try and find myself somewhere to live. I find this city really strange. Back on the UK it’s rare that you would rent your house directly through a landlord usually you go through an agency, however here, there’s very little of that. You usually deal with landlords or flat mates directly and property here move so quickly, you basically need to do direct bank transfers at the property to secure it before it goes! I’m really struggling to find somewhere.
Friday was a good day….I got a job…surprise!! I start next week so Friday was spent printing contracts and filling in paper work and of course buying new work clothes. It was also filled with more failed house hunting.
Saturday was spent doing the beautiful Bondi to Coogee walk with Holly and her friends from work. Glorious 24 degree weather! Again light headed and dizzy! Having to drink water like a crazy person and force myself to eat because the sun ridiculous and I feel like I’m constantly fighting heat stroke.
At the beach they were filming Australian master chef which was pretty cool! So I might get my 15minutes of anonymous fame as you see me taking photos in the background.
The weather here is getting much hotter and is reaching 28-31 degrees which is awesome but almost too hot. Fingers crossed though I eventually get a tan and acclimatise!!
Sunday I went to view a property at Coogee beach. I really like it and the housemates seem awesome so fingers crossed I get it as they had further viewings after I left. After the viewing I sat at the beach with Neeve and then headed back to town to have a manicure for work tomorrow (priorities) and then pack my things as I change hostel rooms again in the morning.
