I’ve Arrived!!
On 11th October 2016 by HelenWell I’m here and am currently sat in my hotel room writing this. I have to say this has been the longest 24 hours of my life. It started really nicely with both my mum and I staying in the Crown Plaza at Heathrow for my last night in the U.K. We had a lovely room and spent the evening chatting and watching our favourite TV shows before heading to sleep.
The room call was at 4am (blurgh) taxi ordered for 5am but naturally that didn’t happen and at 5:30am we were still waiting but eventually it came and I was on my way. I checked in just before 6am and it was a very emotional time. Goodbyes are always the hardest thing and my mum and I are exceptionally close so there were lots of tears. Eventually I dragged myself through security and calmed down only to be made more emotional by the amazing comments my friends and family had left me on my facebook page. I became nervous though when I walked to the gate and saw the plane – can’t get more real than multiple tons of metal starring you in the face. I was zone 5 on the A380 so had to wait ages to bored which makes nerves no better and at this point no amount of rescue remedy was helping me. Once I was on the plane though I was so lucky with the two people I was sat with. I sat with a woman who was travelling to Melbourne and a gentleman who was travelling onto Pakistan and the three of us really got on. We were chatting about ourselves, families and why we were on the plane and it really calmed me down.
People keep asking me if I am nervous to travel and I am, but the main thing playing on my mind was the transfer at Abu Dhabi. Thankfully though it was so easy and such a lovely airport that by the time I got on the second plane I was a lot calmer and this time I managed to have an empty seat between myself and the other person which meant that I could actually get (on and off) about 6 hours sleep total.
I flew with Ethiad and it was such a lovely airline and I would highly recommend them, sadly though my gluten free meal options were awful and I was so glad I had bought my own food with me just in case.
I landed in Sydney at 7.05pm and it took about 15minutes from getting through immigration and getting my bags which was awesome! I was met by my friend Emily and we got a taxi to my hotel and then went out for dinner at a nearby restaurant. It’s so nice to see her and can’t believe she has been away for 6 months already!
Now I have overcome my first Aussie hurdle which was how the hell was I going to charge my phone because the adaptor didn’t fit but figured that out; I am now in bed and need to get some sleep. Am going to the hostel tomorrow which is daunting for me because I haven’t stayed in one before and have no idea what to expect. More updates and lots more pictures as I go! (Also apologies for poor spelling and grammar – too tired)
