Climbing the Pylon
On 20th February 2017 by HelenYesterday I decided to go to climb the Pylon at the side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I found this a pretty interesting comparison as 3 years ago when I was last here I did the actual Bridge Climb which was totally awesome but this is a great alternative and much less harsh on the purse strings.
The Pylon coasts $15 to climb, the stairs aren’t too taxing or steep so I think any age could easily manage them. Half way up there’s a little museum telling you interesting facts about the bridge and it’s construction and a little cinema screen showing a range of videos from way back in the 1930s to modern day New Year fireworks.
The view from the top of the Pylon was amazing and I expected nothing less. The fact that it was a beautiful day without a cloud in the sky and a really nice temperature also helped.
I have to say that even though from the top of the bridge the views just span for absolute miles and are uninterrupted they were not too dissimilar at the top of the Pylon. You had a 360 degree view of the city and surrounding area. You could watch the bridge climbers (not going to lie I was a little bit jealous) so overall this is a much cheaper and just as good experience.
Just as a comparison the Bridge Climb runs at different times of the day and into the evening, depending on which climb you choose prices range between $248-$383. As a bucket list thing to do I would 100% recommend saving hard for this and spending the money. When I did the climb it absolutely surpassed my expectations. They stop you 4-5 times to take photos going up, there is (or certainly was when I did it) a commentary through ear phones as you go up the bridge telling you the history of the bridge and surrounding area. The views were like I said before…amazing! However I totally recognise that it’s a tonne of money so I would also recommend the Pylon at $15 a fraction of the cost.
I also have to say it kind of made me rekindle my love for Sydney yesterday. The last few weeks I’ve felt slightly in a rut and a bit bored of being here, however seeing it yesterday made me re realise how lucky I am to be here and how stunning this place is!
